MAYRA CARIDAD VALDÉS
jazz singer - scat singing
Havana, Cuba

"I saw her sing in France and immediately called her the Cuban Ella Fitzgerald," said Bebo Valdés, the legendary pianist, from his home in Sweden, where he was talking about his daughter Mayra Caridad Valdés. "She was just a little girl when I left Cuba. What an incredible voice. I never taught her, but it was Chucho who did".

This video and much more is on the new Cuban music, arts, and culture website - Havana-Cultura.com. We discovered this site recently and was very impressed.

This is a deep and very well produced site that features young artists in Havana who are on the vanguard of contemporary creative expresstion in Cuba. The site has artists doing interviews along with video clips about their work be it music, visual arts, cinema, performings arts, design-architecture, and literature. The Havana-Cultura.com website is a project of Havana Club, the famous company in Cuba that produces rum products.

Boogalu has no affiliation with this website but salutes this work as the first high quality web based multimedia presentation of Cuban culture generated from inside Cuba.

CUBA BAILA
The opening dance scene from a 1961 Cuban film directed by Julio Espinosa. A glimpse at what popular Cuban dance might have looked like in the early 1960's. The song played is a classic danzon called Tres Lindas Cubanas by Antonio María Romeo, adapted as a charanga. The film is an average drama about a Cuban couple and their difficulties putting on a big party to celebrate their daughter's fifteenth birthday.
CARNAVAL HAVANA 1962

Scenes from the documentary film "Primer Carnaval Socialista" by Alberto Roldan. As the film title says, this was the first carnaval after the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

This looks like such a fun event! I love the fact that it was outdoors and during the day! Wish I could have attended and wish the LA timba community would throw a similar gig!
